Behind the seating area are lots of food vendor stalls cooking to order and these are supported by several ladies in boats also selling fresh food. If you wish to eat you simply buy food coupons, 5 baht(10p) per coupon and exchange them for the plates of food you want. Unused coupons can be cashed in when you leave. The food is very cheap and 400 Baht fed the four of us with change for a cool ice cream on the walk back to he car.
The show we watched involved a search to find a woman for the King of Ayutthaya by the mythical Garuda, which had a male and female half. This led to lots of slapstick humour and plenty of wet actors which made the hour long performance very enjoyable. Another show features the Krai Thong folk tale.
The show is in the Thai language and there is no English narration. The Ayutthaya floating market is located in Klong Sabua district which is just outside the city limits. Unfortunately it is not signposted in English and performances only take place at the weekend (Saturday & Sunday) plus public holidays. The market is open between 10am and 5.30pm. The shows start around 12noon.

Mike this is an interesting one. A play where they walk on water, sounds great and I daresay it happens elsewhere around the globe but it's the first I've heard of it.
The seating area looks a little empty but when I eventually get round to visiting Ayuttaya I intend being sat in it. With the food vendors situated behind, Wilai is going to spend half the time facing the wrong way. The performance is only on weekends, I'll remember that. Deaf not death I'll remember too.
Sounds like it was a very enjoyable way to spend the afternoon...and you can't beat the price for the food.
Ayuttaya will most likely be first on my list next trip so hopefully I can catch this show as well as it looks like a good time.
@ Martyn the main seating area is where I was taking the shot from, this is also where the food vendors are. Those on the opposite side just came for the free show!
@ Talen a nice place for lunch definitely. Ideally to get the best out of Ayutthaya you need your own transport as some of the attractions are space d out
sounds like another inexpensive day trip possibility Thailand and issan is full of them and a decent food to boot
the show would look really good around dusk with the light on the lake
Ayutthaya as so far eluded me but its just another place to visit at some point
regards john
@john unfortunately they do not appear to do an evening show, which as you say would make for some interesting photographs.
Hi Mike,
Funnily enough I was there a few weeks ago when my family was over here. The Ayutthya water market is one of the best, glad you found it and sampled it.
I must admit to being quite spoilt, there is one just five minutes from me here in Saraburi. We go every other Sunday morning for a few hours - love the fresh food and the river and traditional dances makes for spectacular scenes.
